Overfed and Undernourished? How is that possible?

As a nation we eat a poor quality foods that have been stripped of nutrients. We do not consume enough fresh fruits and vegetables. Many of us get our whole grains from instant rice, refined wheat breads pastas, and cereal. We eat a tremendous amount of pre-packaged, pre-made meals. One-quarter of Americans eat at fast food restaurants each day. Americans are overfed and undernourished. We eat plenty, but we are still starving, how is that possible?. The foods we eat are not providing our bodies with the nutrition they need to survive and be healthy. We are starving our bodies and we are sick. We suffer from diabetes, heart attacks, obesity, and the list goes on and on. Let’s take an example, Cereal! Let’s read together a typical cereal box label. Most of us consider cereal, which has been refined for shelf life, to be a healthy choice. But if we look more closely at the label, we can see that it contains hydrogenated oil, sugar, and vitamin isolates.  Nothing that our bodies need.

But there is GOOD NEWS. Given the proper nutrition, the human body has an amazing ability of keeping itself healthy. If properly fed and given the right nutrients, the human body is designed to repair itself. To do so we need to eat a healthier diet, exercise, and take high-quality supplements made from whole foods. Whole food supplements supply our bodies with the nutrients we are not getting from our diet, all the vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and phytonutrients that foods possess, in the way that nature intended, in a whole food form.

Let’s now look at the refining process of wheat. The wheat kernel is comprised of starch and nutrient-rich bran and germ.  Step 1: the bran and germ are removed, resulting in primarily empty starch flour. Step 2:  the processed flour is bleached to improve the appearance and texture of consumer goods. Step 3: at this point since it has lost the majority of its nutrients, B vitamins and iron included, the industry decides to enrich the bleached flour with a few isolated B vitamins and iron in an attempt to replace what has been removed. You must know that Nutrient-deficient consumer goods that have the ability to sit in a store shelf for an extended period of time are the final result.

The solution

Besides of course trying to incorporate whole foods into your diet, in my practice I use only whole food supplements to complete the nutritional gap. I have researched plenty before recommending a supplement to a patient and I have found Standard Process to be the brand I can trust for purity, concentration of nutrients and results. What are whole food supplements? They are made by concentrating foods. When concentrated correctly, the foods supply a multitude of nutrients. These nutrients work synergistically, meaning they work together, to provide you with optimal nutrition for good health.

A word of advice from a professional: not all whole food supplements are the same!! Many whole foods supplements available in today’s marketplace range in quality. Companies are riding the wave of supplement popularity rather than focusing on commitment and quality, I know very sad.
